street begging elephants
Street begging elephants and their mahouts (elephant handlers) wander the city streets and bars in tourist areas from 6pm until midnight selling bags of sugarcane, pineapple and bananas which tourists, often drunk, then feed to the elephant. This is a terrible life for an elephant, listed below are reasons why:
❖The Thai government banned elephants from city streets in 2009 but mahouts still risk hefty fines and bring their elephants to the city
❖People caught feeding elephants may be fined up to 10,000 baht and a mahout could face a prison sentence of up to 6 months if caught
❖Tourists should NOT give money, pay to feed, or have photographs taken with elephants
